Once Upon a Mattress Music by: Mary Rodgers Lyrics by: Marshall Barer Book by: Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller Illinois Wesleyan University, McPherson Theatre 8 pm November 17-20, 2 pm 20-21 ***PRESS RELEASE**** The Illinois Wesleyan School of Theatre Arts is proud to present Once Upon a Mattress with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller, in McPherson Theatre on November 17-21. In this musical send up of the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, The Princess and the Pea, Queen Aggravain has ruled that none may wed until her son, Prince Dauntless, does. However, she has managed to sabotage every princess that comes along. When Sir Harry and Lady Larken learn that they are going to be parents, married or not, Harry goes off to the swamps and brings back Princess Winnifred. The queen is horrified by the unconventional Winnifred and immediately begins to scheme; but with some help from the Minstrel, the King, and the Jester, Winnifred is not going to be quite so easy to get rid of and merry mayhem ensues. Carried on a wave of wonderful 1950s songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this spin on the familiar yarn of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for a family friendly experience in the theatre. With our MGM movie musical approach chances are you'll never look at this fairytale quite the same way again. Tickets will be available for purchase Monday, November 8. General admission ticket prices range from $12 for performances Wednesday through Thursday, and the matinees on Saturday and Sunday, to $14 for performances Friday and Saturday evening. Senior tickets are available for $1 off of the general rate and student tickets are $2 with proof of a valid school ID. Each performance Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday evening, will begin at 8 pm. Matinees Saturday and Sunday will begin at 2 pm.
