New Yorker critic John Lahr describedPassion Play as "a backstage story about the rehearsal and the staging of the medieval mystery plays in Elizabeth Is England, Hitlers Germany, and Reagans America. In all three parts, the enactment of Christs sacrifice is played off against the droll hubbub of the actors selfishness." Lahr quotes the playwright's program note: More and more, it seems to me that the separation between church and state is coming into question in our country, Ruhl writes. We are a divided nation. And the more divided we are, the less we talk about what divides us.
