July 19 10:00 am - Lincoln's in Town In the Community Room, the Library will air a video recording of Lincolns in Town, an original dramatization of Abraham Lincoln's sojourns in Bloomington. It was written by Nancy Steele Brokaw and presented as a play in 2009 at the Bloomington Center for Performing Arts. The play follows Lincoln's Bloomington career from his initial appearance as a newly minted lawyer through all of his best-known legal and political appearances in town -- including his famous 'Lost Speech' of 1856.
July 19 1:00 pm - Prelude to the Presidency In the Community Room, the Library will show the film Lincoln: Prelude to the Presidency.
July 19 & 20 - Patriotic Pin Craft for Teens Teens are invited to stop into teenZone anytime on July 19 or July 20 to make a patriotic pin as we celebrate the annual Lincoln's Festival in Bloomington. All supplies will be provided.
July 19 3:00 pm - 1864 - The Devastation of the Civil War on the Home Front In 1864, the War of Northern Aggression had been going on for four long years. Southerners were running out of items necessary to maintain a civilized way of life. Their armies were low on men, rations, uniforms, and morale as families at home were doing their best to survive the catastrophic results of war on their farms and in their towns. Creative uses of that which remained were put into service to fill the void of a once affluent and well-respected society. Visit with us as we glimpse into the everyday lives of the southern elite, poor, landowner, and tenant as they each face the frailties of the disintegration of their land and way of life. We will examine medicinal home remedies, shortages of food, clothing, household goods, and housing. It was imperative to keep the home fires burning so husbands, sons, fathers, and brothers would have a proper Southern home which to return. This 3pm Community Room program will be presented by Anne and Laura Lehmkuhl and the Ladies of the 22nd Illinois Volunteers.
July 20 1:30 pm - Abraham Lincoln and his Family This 1:30pm program in the Librarys Community Room will discuss the family life of Abraham Lincoln, including his wife Mary and his four sons. The personal lives of the Lincolns are among the most misunderstood topics in all of Lincoln studies, and Mary Lincoln is one of the most controversial figures in American history. Though three of the four Lincoln sons did not live to see adulthood, their presence had an indisputable influence on both the Springfield and White House years. This program will analyze the everyday life of Abraham Lincoln, rather than his political greatness. We will also discuss Lincolns role as both father and husband. Emphasis will be placed on the personality traits of the individual family members. This program will be presented by Tom Emery.
July 20 3:30 pm - Songs of the Sesquicentennial The Orpheus Mandolin Orchestra will perform a Collection of songs that were either written or inspired by the American Civil War. Meet at 3:30pm in the Community Room.
