Group Tour Itinerary
Day
One
After you check into your hotel, enjoy dinner at Central Station
Cafe. This restaurant is located in what used to be the main
fire station for the City of Bloomington from 1902 to 1974.
Restored and renovated, it offers a unique, casual atmosphere
for group dining.
Summer evenings can be spent under the stars at the Illinois
Shakespeare Festival. Choose from one of three plays rotated
nightly each summer. Each performance is proceeded by strolling
Madrigal Singers and a Green Show.
Day
Two
Enjoy breakfast at your leisure. Start off your morning with
a tour of the Funk Prairie Home and Gem & Mineral Museum.
Lafayette Funk was an Illinois State Senator, co-founder and
director of Chicago's Union Stock Yards and the "Cattle-King"
of Illinois. His restored 1864 residence is filled with family
memorabilia such as a working Victrola. They also enjoyed
luxuries such as hot and cold running water and an outdoor
lighted tennis court on the lawn.
Take time to "talk to the animals" at the Miller
Park Zoo! A landmark since 1891, it features an Indoor Rain
Forest with 20 different species of exotic birds, Sumatran
Tigers, Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, and Red Wolves.
Lunch will bring you to a number of possibilities. From Old
Country Buffet to Cracker Barrel to Quizno's Deli, the possibilities
are endless. Continue your afternoon with a Step-On Guided
tour of the Bloomington-Normal Area. Find out about the practice
Abraham Lincoln kept in downtown Bloomington, famous authors
and beautiful homes. This tour makes you wish the walls of
these old buildings could talk! Follow up with a self-guided
tour of the McLean County Museum of History. The ongoing exhibit,
"Encounter On The Prairie," lets you see who came
to McLean County in search of the American Dream and how they
lived and worked.
Your next meal will take you "down under" with the
Kelly Gang! The crocodiles and boomerangs at Ned Kelly's Steakhouse
will put an Australian twist in the evening. Catch a movie
at the Normal Theater. This theater, built in 1937, has been
fully restored and is on the National Register of Historic
Places. The art deco/modern design as well as the fact that
they still show older and classic films creates a true "step-back-in-time"
experience!
Day
Three
Enjoy breakfast before checking out of your hotel. Visit the
David Davis Mansion and you will be in the home of the mentor
and good friend of Abraham Lincoln. David Davis is credited
with encouraging Lincoln to run for President! Lincoln appointed
Davis to the US Supreme Court out of gratitude for his mentor's
role in his road to the White House. This home was built in
1872 and exemplifies the life of the rich and powerful of
the late 19th Century.
Stop by to enjoy a world-famous treat that is made only in
Bloomington-Normal: Beer Nuts! Groups can view a video that
lets you get a peek at how the product was created and how
it is produced today. The outlet shop includes everything
from the famous nuts to collectible canisters and clothing
with the recognizable logo.
If your group has some airplane enthusiasts, be sure to stop
at the Prairie Aviation Museum. From photos and models to
the full-sized plane, they have it all. Their pride and joy
is a 1942 DC-3. Remolded to resemble an Ozark Airlines Passenger
Plane, it is the only plane on the National Register that
still flies!
